Not that religion has never been used as an excuse for genocide mind you, but people can kill in the name of anything, even in an atheistic environment. Saying “those religious people are responsible for this” or something similar is just a precursor to forming sides. Genocide is not about religion, or even ideals, it’s about ignorance. People dehumanize each other and let rhetoric and mass anger take over.
