“Great little camera“

I’ve been using the new Canon SD 780 for about a week now, and I like it. I’ve been a Canon point-and-shoot fan for some time. In my opinion Canon has the best optics. I have a Canon G10 for higher-end photography and although it is a compact camera, it is not quite a pocket camera. I wanted something I could easily keep in my shirt pocket all the time and the SD 780 fits the bill perfectly. I find that I shoot a lot less if I don’t have a really compact camera available. The SD780IS Canon’s smallest camera to date.

It’s easy to use and the Canon layout is excellent. The buttons are small and it may take a day or two to get used to them, especially if you have big hands. The HD video is really great and noticeably better quality than the 640 x 480 mode of my G10. My quibbles are few:

– 3.2 maximum aperture instead of the usual 2.8

– No optical zoom in the movie mode.

– Grainy images at ISO of 400 and higher. This is a problem with most point-and shoot cameras, even my G10.

Overall, considering the very small size, it’s a great camera.

I got this one refurbished for 105$ from the beatch camera on [...]
Comparing to my old canon sd 870 IS, the night shot is way better. The video quality is also good except the audio noise. But what would you expect from such a tiny body.

I tend to buy point & shoot when there are enough reviews and when there are refurbished version so that I can get the best features for the money. I also have a test in store with canon sd1400IS, the replacement model. However, it is just some more pixels. I would go this one if it is 80-100$ cheaper. 12M is enough and both shoot 720p. The wide of the lens on this is enough for family and daily shots. If you most of time shoot group photos, then go for sd1400IS. but for most family users, sd780IS lens is wide enough.

I would recommend any one get this if you
(1) want above avg image quality and shoot HD video
(2) have a DSLR and want a compact to carry with.

I just love this camera. The picture quality is good and with the 16gb disk I have inside I can take tons of pictures or long videos. Since I know this camera so well, when I went to replace the one I dropped in the water (my bad) I chose to purchase the same unit again because I didn’t see the need for a new version at higher cost when this one does such a great job. It is so portable and people are shocked at the quality of the video’s I am able to take with it. I also love the fact that it will adjust for macro pictures so I can take up close shots. It is small enough to fit in my purse or pocket so it goes with me everywhere. The battery charges quickly and compared to AA batteries lasts much longer.
